Increase Western Visits to the Great Wall of China
Granted, the world has come a long way. Our understanding of other countries and cultures has evolved rapidly in the past decades. People travel more. The Internet has closed the knowledge gap significantly.
But it is not enough. Take China, a country that is home to more than a billion people on Earth, a country with so much culture and history – and so many of us know so little about it. If we truly want to build a better place for all of us to live in, we need to take more solid steps in closing cultural gaps.
A good place to start is by significantly ramping up tours to China and making Great Wall of China tours a mandatory part of the trip. After all, this is probably the longest-ever construction project in the world, starting at 7th Century BC and continuing until 17th Century AD.
How much do Westerners know about its history, why it was built, who built it, how the construction techniques transformed over decades and centuries? Probably not much.
While the Chinese capital has a reputable and established cadre of Beijing tours that offer diversified and tailored Beijing tour package to visitors, apparently Beijing tour operators are still getting most of their business from Asian tourists who last year counted for 62 percent of foreign visitors to China.
With more than 5 million tourists, Europe counted for 20 percent of foreign tourists in China and United States sent about 3 million visitors, comprising slightly less than 12 percent China’s total foreign tourists. Some countries such as France and United Kingdom actually showed a negative growth compared to 2013.
Great Wall of China tours deserve greater attention. There is hardly a bad time to visit. Depending in which part of the wall one might want most to visit, anytime between May to October would probably be most suitable.
Just pack your bags with a good camera, a hat to keep out the invading sun, maybe carry an umbrella just in case, and go on a journey that would enrich yourself and could help bring more harmony in life.
