Is FB Really Losing its Popularity Amongst Millennials?
It is true that no two generations are alike, and while much of the world seems to be hooked on Facebook, it seems as though millennials are more deeper than their Facebook page. While we’ve all heard the line, “Facebook is not cool anymore” at least once in the past few years, the trend seems to be catching on amongst the younger crowd.
According to some surprising reports, the social media’s penetration within the US market and especially among college going adults has significantly declined over the past few years. The irony here is that Facebook started off by catering to college going students and was once the most widely used social media outlet on campus across the US.
What makes it even worse is that while Facebook’s numbers have decreased with millennial users other social media platforms such as Twitter, Instagram, Tumblr and Snapchat have all managed to steadily increase their usership during the same time period. Out of all of these outlets, Snapchat has managed to gain the most attention among 18 to 20 year olds. App users are sending up to 700 million photos and videos per day which is remarkable considering it has only been around since 2011. So, just for the heck this tech blog has put down some of the reasons why millennials are moving away from Facebook.
To Keep their Private Life Private
We have all heard the line, “Be careful what you post of Facebook.” This proves to be true, especially for millennials who are job hunting. More and more employers are turning to Facebook to pre-screen their potential employees. This means, having a wall that’s a bit incriminating won’t work well for the average employer. This fear is legitimate since employers nowadays, gauge the people they are about to hire via their social media presence, which starts off with their Facebook account.
Takes a Psychological Toll
The fact of the matter is that Facebook makes it hard to avoid sensitive information, such as how you lost your last job? Or the subjects you flunked in school? According to a recent study by the University of Utah’s Department of Behavioral Science, youngsters who have used Facebook service longer agreed that others had a better life than them and that other people were happier in general. This is mainly because of the increased competition amongst the new generation. Millennials usually find themselves comparing themselves and even their group of friends to others.
Existential Crisis
Moreover, one of the most pressing reasons why most millennials feel iffy about using Facebook nowadays is because of the effects their digital representation has on their own lives. “You can check out anytime you like, but you can never leave.”
Sound familiar, the truth is that there are many 20-somethings who are trying to do the same thing.
Ending Note
According to this tech sites , while Facebook isn’t as cool as it once was, it fair to say that the social media service has transformed from being appealing to being a valuable utility which can be compared to other services such as Google for example.
