The UI Inventions (We’re Looking Forward to) in 2015
Ahh, the New Year is here and it’s time to count all of our blessings once again. While we’ve been able to scratch off a few things from our list of gadgets created to make the world better, the truth is that there is always room for cool innovations. So, keeping that in mind, here is a list of new technologies we would like to see come to life this year.
The Year of the Smart Button
Don’t get me wrong, we still love touch screens, whether they’re on our phones or in our cars, but let’s be honest here. You can’t just slap a touchscreen on everything and make it look cool. Okay, maybe you can, but that doesn’t make it more functional. Fortunately for us, there are those who are working on bringing the button back into our lives. According to various tech sites, (which we will not name here) a team of Swedish entrepreneurs have introduced to us a smart button called the Flic, which is an easy-to-use, programmable button which can trigger various apps on your smartphone. But, there is so much more that the Flic can do. Like control you lights, doors, play music and even order pizza. Powered by a battery that can last for up to five days, the Flic can stick to any surface thanks to a double sided adhesive, and has an amazing range.
Clearing Up the Cloud
It is without a doubt that 2014 was the year of the hackers, from Heartbleed to the Sony hacks, looking at all the reports on various tech sites last year is enough to know that 2014 was by far the worst year for security and more importantly, the cloud. But what makes things even worse for those of us who use the cloud is that we don’t really know where one cloud ends and the other begins. For instance, if you want to set your iPhone to a cloud service, which one do you go for? iCloud Drive, iCloud, or Family Share? Do we really know the difference between these three anyway? The cloud is supposed to be simple, so perhaps this year we’ll see some of that simplicity taking shape and simplifying our lives when it comes to using the cloud.
Beyond the Tap
It is no secret that the smartphone eased us in by making our lives easier in a “give a man a fish” sort of way. What it did was it didn’t really teach us how to fish, just helped us in doing stuff. This pattern has not changed much, and most people can now be seen tapping on their smartphones and tablets. But, recently, the way we use our smartphone has changed a bit, (for the better). Apple, who we hold above all else, introduced to us the swiping, or as we like to call it, “smack that ass” gesture. The gestural shortcut is used from the left edge of the screen to go back a nick.
Its faster, easier to remember and a great addition when it comes to shortcuts. The only downside is, you can’t use it everywhere. This year we would definitely like to see the fluid gestures expand into new ideas that don’t seem to be disorganized. Android and iOS have both persistently worked on the tap, swipe and pinch to zoom features, and we’d expect more where that came from to save us from a few clicks.
So, these were a few quick fixes we expect to see in 2015. And come to think of it, they’re not too much to ask for. Besides, how hard could they be?
