How to Make Real Estate More Affordable in Australia
When I was a kid, I wondered most about two things. First, I wondered about the profession into which I should go. Second, just as a hobby, I wondered in which country I would want to live if I had the option to live anywhere. Australia was always a dream. The country is vast and beautiful and I personally knew a fair number of hard-working people who were living in Brisbane.
And salaries were decent enough. I could become a graphic designer and earn about $50,000 or double that by becoming an operations manager in some company. But then it was a matter of buying a house. Median house prices in 2014 were about $450,000. At those rates, I would have needed every help I could get to afford a nice house.
Part of the problem is the commission that real estate agents charge. While the rate in Australia is still around 2.5percent –far lower than, say, the United States where it is about 6-7 percent– it still adds up to a lot of money.
I started thinking if I could pay low realestate commission in Brisbane or find low commission real estate agents who would not mind making less on low commission property sales. I was about to give up until I heard from a friend in Brisbane. She had been trying to sell her house and had asked a friend, “Can I sell my property without a real estate agent?”
But, why not, came the answer. The friend suggested contacting Revolutionary Real Estate agency that has recently starting work in the Brisbane area. “It’s better than low real estate commission,” the friend had said, “They charge no commission. They work with sellers to find the right marketing solution so the property gets sold fast.”
Maybe I should have gone to Australia!
